Why the Icelandic Horse is the best breed

Calling all horse lovers AND those wanting a crash course in one of the world’s most beloved breeds: the Icelandic horse truly blew our minds! 🐎

Famous for friendly temperament, muscular frame, comfy riding, and pony-like stature, the Icelandic horse only stands an average of 4.59 feet tall. However they weigh between 730-840 lbs and boast a double coat to keep them warm in winter.

What makes the Icelandic horse unique?

An Icelandic horse can perform 5 gaits whereas most horses can only do 3 or 4. The common gaits are called walk, trot, and canter, but an Icelandic horse can also do the skeið/flugskeið, known as “flying pace” in English, or ‘the 5th gear’ among equestrians.

They also have the tölt in their repertoire, which is a sped up version of walking, but is much more impressive because the horses lift their front legs up high and only one foot touches the ground at any given time. This is useful for the uneven ground and provides a steady ride.

Purebred for more than 1,000 years!

The ancestors of the Icelandic horse first arrived with Viking settlers from the British Isles between 860 and 935 AD. Due to cross breeding attempts, a new law was passed by the Viking parliament Althing in 982 AD that forbid the future import of foreign horses to prevent the degeneration of the stock. Once an Icelandic horse leaves the island, it can never return.

Iceland even has a horse naming committee, though more Icelandic Horses exist off the island than on it due to their popularity around the world. …now we know why! ♥️🐴
