Snorkeling the Silfra Fissure in Iceland

A life experience you don't want to miss if you love crystal-clear water.

Luke and Samantha snorkel the Silfra Fissure in Iceland together to face their fears and make a memory
The lowdown: Silfra is a fissure in Þingvellir National Park in Iceland that was created in 1789 by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This remarkable crack between two tectonic plates continuously fills with glacial water that’s been trickling through underground lava for approximately 30 years. The fissure grows about 2 cm every year!

Why Is Silfra Fissure So Renowned?

The fissure has some of the clearest, deepest visibility of any water in the world (exceeding 100 meters!), so it’s a diver/snorkeler’s haven! Divers come from all over the world specifically to see this fissure made of lava rock, sand, and bright glowing algae. Plus, the constant gentle current assures nothing scary can live there, and it pushes you right along so you hardly have to swim at all.

Where else can you touch both continents at the same time? An underwater playground exists right beneath your nose, as you can explore famous areas known as the Big Crack, Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral, and the Silfra Lagoon.

Our Takeaways

Despite being nervous, our #OneGoodThing today came from being courageous enough to get in the van and drive somewhere we didn’t know to do something we had no prior experience doing. Not to mention, swimming in the frigid North Atlantic Ocean sounded terrifying. We told ourselves we’d rather look back and say “that was wild — what a memory” than say “I wish we would have done that.”

Thankfully a single moment of courage can lead to a memory of a lifetime. We have no regrets!

Pretty awesome group, right? This is what you look like before you go into 36-degree water…

We drank the water in gulps (glacier fresh!) and made new friends from Pennsylvania (Josh and Bergen) on their honeymoon, as well as a brave woman, Kellen, from Hawaii who completed the excursion in a wet suit — not a dry suit like us, despite the water being a frigid 36 degrees. 😬 Congrats to the outgoing couple, and best wishes for the rest of your marriage!

Tour Guide Recommendation

Shoutout to Ivan from Mexico for being the best guide we could have asked for, for helping us get on our gear easily, and giving us free photos he took during the experience. 👍🏻 For this reason, we’d recommend the company Adventure Vikings to book this experience though.

The excursion was about 40 minutes in the water, plus 20 minutes of dressing (who knew dry suits can be so tough to get into and out of?) and information beforehand. The 15 minutes afterward included a complimentary cup of hot coffee or tea to warm your bones. Plus, we received a link to see all our group photos Ivan took on the GoPro, completely free of charge. Talk about a sweet bonus!

One thing is for sure: We’ll never see water like that again!

Couples who snorkel together stay together!
Lava rocks like this one were everywhere, jutting up from the water.
