What's Garden Tractor Pulling?

Q&A with Craig Bowers about Old School Garden Tractor Pullers

Henry Breininger, inspiration for Craig Bowers to found Old School Garden Tractor Pullers

Do you know what garden tractor pulling is? Who’d have thought you’d find this much excitement in small-town Farmer, Ohio? The annual “Pull & Show For a Cure” raises money for local NW Ohio school FFA Chapters to help find a cure for cancer.

Thanks to the Old School Garden Tractor Pullers for hosting this event Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, and having us out to capture the action!

Inspiration & Q&A with Founder Craig

As we learned more about this event and how it started, we knew it deserved a blog story. We sat down with founder Craig (“Bert”) Bowers (also the Shop Manger for Kuhn Brothers Service Center in Sherwood, Ohio) for a Q&A to get the scoop on garden tractor pulling.

When did Old School Garden Tractor Pullers begin? Where do the name and logo come from?

“I began Old School Garden Tractor Pullers in 2018. The name comes from the old Farmer School in Farmer, Ohio, I attended that our home track is located at. The logo is a silhouette of the old school building, and the orange and black colors are a tribute to the Farmer Tigers of old.”

What got you started with garden tractor pulling? When did you get your first tractor?

“Henry Breininger got me started pulling when I was a sophomore at Fairview High School. I built my first garden tractor, the ‘CB Special,’ in shop class with FFA teacher Mr. Ray Woodring and Mr. Frank Borkowski. This year (2022) marks 43 years for me pulling garden tractors.”

Tell us more about Henry, his pulling days, and how he got you into garden tractor pulling.

“Henry started pulling in the mid to late 70’s. Back in the day, the Breiningers raced midgets and stock cars. The fellow that used to drive their cars was a guy by the name of Roy Forbes. Fun fact, their midget held the indoor speed record at Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum for many years. Henry had family friends from Pittsford, Michigan – the Knapp family – that pulled garden tractors, and I think that’s how he got into it. Even to this day, Shirley Knapp still pulls with the Tri-State Mini Pullers.

Henry was my neighbor. He pulled at tracks all around the area in those days, local fairs, town festivals, and all sorts of places. His first tractor that he built was the Dirt Digger, and the second was Dirt Digger 2. They were entirely home built. He was known for wearing a Dirt Digger shirt at pulls.”

What are some of your favorite things about garden tractor pulling? What keeps you going all these years?

“I like the idea of going out and building your own tractor, modifying them, and I really enjoy promoting our pulls. I’ve spent years on a tractor, and every time have a pull, I meet new people that become new friends. None of that would happen without garden tractor pulling.”

How many events does Old School Garden Tractor Pullers hold each year, and when is the season?

“We run 4-6 pulls per year, from mid-summer to fall.”

How can someone get involved with Old School Garden Tractor Pullers?

“Contact me if you’re interested, and I’d be happy to help you. You can call 419-899-4040 and ask for Craig. Or join our group on Facebook at “Old School Garden Tractor Pullers.”

Where should someone look for their first tractor?

“I’d recommend watching the classifieds or farm auctions. A lot of the older stuff is the better stuff — Cub Cadets are very popular to build, but there’s old Simplicity, Allis-Chalmers, Wheelhorse, Old Sears, Old John Deere’s, and many others out there. I’d recommend attending a pulling event and chatting with some of the pullers there. They’re often very excited to talk about their tractors and more than willing to help.”

What’s the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a pull?

“I met a fellow on Facebook a few years ago, and he said they were having a benefit pull for his dad, who was unwell. They had a Saturday evening pull in Bolivar, Missouri, that I attended. We traveled 620 miles one way with two tractors for that event. It was worth it.”

What are some other local/regional pulling events that you attend or would recommend attending?

“There are lots of pulls at county fairs and festivals — search locally online for garden tractor pulling near you and you might be surprised what you find!”

*Dedication note: Henry Breininger and his wife Zee both passed away recently. Craig would like to dedicate this year’s “2022 Pull & Show for a Cure” and our video to Henry for getting him started pulling 43 years ago.
